LG to Shut Down Mobile Phone Plant in Mexico in June 2009
May 22, 2009
After the Mexican government removed a 15% tariff on imported mobile phones in February 2009, LG announced on May 21 that the company will discontinue mobile phone production in Mexico in June 2009 as part of its efforts to reduce costs by 30% in 2009, the Dow Jones Newswires reported on May 21. This plant currently has a monthly capacity of around 200,000 mobile phones. The plant's 200 employees will be affected by the shutdown. After closing the Mexican plant, LG has four mobile phone manufacturing plants in four countries, including Brazil, China, India, and South Korea.
